In the summers of 2014 and 2015, I have had the opportunity to teach STAR Summer School at Simmons Middle School in the East Aurora School District. This summer program helps students build their academic and social skills over the summer as well as become used to the rules and routines of middle school before they attend Simmons Middle School in the fall. These students come from various schools, backgrounds and ability levels in the East Aurora School District. In the past times I have taught these students, I have taught math, reviewing their basic math skills, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, as well as building their knowledge of basic fraction skills, for example, dividing and adding fractions. Below, you will find two lessons I have planned and executed for these classes.
Lesson 1: My name in Fractions
Lesson 2: Adding Fractions

Here are two activities I used on the first days of school to help get to know my students when we started school in the summer. The M&Ms can be substituted if there are allergies, and can also later be used for teaching fractions. My students also had a lot of fun with the Human Scavenger Hunt, and I like to join in because it gets my students talking to each other and allows them to learn more about me in the process, building a better classroom community.
